Not many companies on the
Indian corporatescape have survived the internet’s boom and
bust. While many had entered the fray, only a handful managed
to sustain themselves. Indiatimes has led that tiny brigade,
and ultimately ended up doing a solo in achieving the coveted
the “profitable” show at a time when the words “profit” and
“internet” could never be juxtaposed.
Mahendra Swarup,
as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Times
Internet Limited has led this unique charge taking Indiatimes
from under the Times of India umbrella to the glory of being a
super brand by its own right in just three
years.
|
|
|
Success has come to Indiatimes not because
of the way the company did business, but because of the way
its leadership thought. Mr. Swarup is a diehard believer in
the Internet, mobile and convergence of the new media. He
professes chaos as the solution for stability and practice
fluidity of processes as the breeding ground for innovation.
It is this iconoclastic brain that created a culture of rare
brilliance which forms the foundation of TIL’s success story.
He also led Indiatimes into the Mobile Value Added Services
space and pioneered the SMS based services through the first
independent short code 8888. Mr. Swarup was the Executive
Director on the board of PepsiCo in India before he took over
as Managing Director & CEO of Times Internet Limited. His
key achievements as part of the top management team at PepsiCo
included growth of the market addition of 11 factories,
consolidation of franchisees and affecting a substantial
increase in the business.
Mr. Swarup is an MBA from
Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi. He has
over 29 years of business experience and has held corporate
responsibilities in blue-chip companies like ACC, Nestle
India, Sun Breweries - Moscow and PepsiCo at the senior most
functional levels of operations, Sales & Distribution,
Purchasing/Procurement, Exports and HR. He has also served on
the Board of Directors of Computer Point (a large software
trading and training organization) and EMA India (an OEM of
Mercedes Benz). |
